Our speaker will be fellow UU Susan Bartlett Foote, author of The Crusade for Forgotten Souls, (Winner Minnesota Book Award for Minnesota Nonfiction 2019). Susan’s book describes the path-breaking efforts of Unitarians and others to reform Minnesota’s state hospitals for the mentally ill from 1946 – 1954. Their efforts catapulted Minnesota for a time from among the worst to a model for other states to follow. For additional details and ordering see Crusade For Forgotten Souls. Susan is well-qualified to tell this story, she is professor emerita in the School of Public Health at the UM (1999-2010), where she was head of the Division of Health Policy and Management from 1999 to 2005.
